I find the same technique works beautifully with my daughter - she loves hearing stories about what I was like when I was young (or not so young!), and it really seems to help her figure out her behaviour and be willing to do things deliberately to solve the problem but only once she realizes that the problem is not unique to her and that other people in fact deal with things...and sometimes so well that she isn't even aware of it. On top of the fact that little kids really don't seem to get that their parents aren't perfect, and are incredibly amused when they get to see that we're actually human too.
