That's a milkweed plant, which is the plant that monarch caterpillars like.I had to ask my mother-in-law, who is trained as a botanist. I assumed it was some exotic New Zealand plant, but of course it is not. I just don't know much about plants!
Fascinating plant, it looks like a puffer fish!
